A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The purpose of this Act is to require the auditor to conduct an audit of the department of education's school food services branch to determine the current baseline of how much local produce is being purchased and served to students in the school cafeterias.  The intent of this Act is to use the results of the audit to provide the legislature with information on what type of food is being purchased by the school food services branch for school meals to help determine how much of the purchased food is locally sourced.

     SECTION 2.  (a)  The auditor shall conduct an audit of the department of education's school food services branch to determine the current amount of local produce purchased and served to students by the branch and to identify the sources of the purchased produce to establish a baseline amount of produce which is locally sourced.

     (b)  The auditor shall submit a report of the auditor's findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2022.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
