HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING A STUDY ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TRADITIONAL HAWAIIAN PRACTICES, INCLUDING THE MAKAHIKI, AND THEIR EFFECT ON THE PERPETUATION OF NATIVE HAWAIIAN CULTURE.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, many Native Hawaiians have an interest in maintaining their traditional cultural practices; and

 

     WHEREAS, makahiki games show the strength of Hawaiian warriors and keep Native Hawaiians connected to their roots; and

 

     WHEREAS, prime examples of makahiki games include ulu maika, oo ihe, hukihuki, pa uma, and haka moa; and

 

     WHEREAS, makahiki games such as hakamoa demonstrate how the Native Hawaiian people were capable of strength and stamina in times of war; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirtieth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2019, that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is requested to conduct a study on the significance of traditional Hawaiian practices and their effect on the perpetuation of Native Hawaiian culture; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it is requested that the scope of the study include the significance of the makahiki, its impact on the continuation of Native Hawaiian cultural practices, and the need for the continuation of all makahiki practices for the purpose of preserving and perpetuating the Native Hawaiian culture for future generations; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Office of Hawaiian Affairs is requested to submit its findings to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2020; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.
