A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

RELATING TO HISTORIC PRESERVATION.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 6E, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§6E-    President Barack Obama markers.  (a)  The department shall place historical markers in the State to indicate significant sites in the life of President Barack Obama, the forty-fourth President of the United States of America.

     (b)  The sites shall include but are not limited to Baskin-Robbins on King Street, Island Snow, Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, Koko Crater Trail, Noelani Elementary School, Punahou Circle Apartments, Punahou School, and Sandy Beach; provided that the private businesses agree to have the marker placed at the business or, if a private business does not agree, that the marker shall be placed on public property nearest to the site."

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2017-2018 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2018-2019 for the department of land and natural resources to place historical markers in the State to indicate significant sites in the life of President Barack Obama.

     The sums appropriated shall be expended by the state historic preservation division of the department of land and natural resources for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2017.
