HOUSE RESOLUTION

URGING THE BOARD OF REGENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII TO CREATE A CENTER FOR women in technology.

WHEREAS, the number of women graduating with degrees in computer science has decreased nationwide from thirty-seven percent in 1985 to eighteen percent in 2015 and women currently comprise only twenty-four percent of the computing workforce; and

WHEREAS, computing jobs in the United States are growing at three times the rate of overall job creation, but there are only forty thousand computer science graduates; and

WHEREAS, in order to achieve the state goal of increasing the number of technology jobs, there has to be a well-trained and competent workforce to fill these positions; and

WHEREAS, increasing the number of women earning degrees in computer science allows women to enter this growing job market and increase their quality of life; and

WHEREAS, in Hawaii only thirty-three percent of Advanced Placement computer science exam takers were female; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Information and Computer Sciences within the University of Hawaii can accommodate a Center for Women in Technology to develop programs to build interest in the field among current and future female students; and

WHEREAS, this center can serve as the clearinghouse for matters involving women in computer science in the state; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, that the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii is urged to establish a Center for Women in Technology within the University; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, the Chairperson of the Board of Education, and the Director of Labor and Industrial Relations.
