HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

requesting the department of the attorney general to conduct a study of police officer staffing levels in the thirteenth representative district.

WHEREAS, the thirteenth representative district includes east Maui and the islands of Lanai and Molokai; and

WHEREAS, many parts of the thirteenth representative district are rural and isolated; and

WHEREAS, traveling from one place in the thirteenth representative district to another place in that district often takes a considerable period of time; and

WHEREAS, it is important that residents of the thirteenth representative district feel safe, secure, and adequately protected by police; and

WHEREAS, there are concerns within the thirteenth representative district that the level of police officer staffing for that district may be inadequate; and

WHEREAS, an objective analysis of the sufficiency of police officer staffing levels within the thirteenth representative district would help determine whether police staffing should be increased in that district; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-ninth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2017, the Senate concurring, that the Department of the Attorney General is requested to conduct a study to analyze the adequacy of police officer staffing levels in the portion of east Maui that is within the thirteenth representative district, and on the islands of Lanai and Molokai; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of the Attorney General is requested to submit its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2018; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Attorney General and to the Chief of the Maui Police Department.
