A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

relating to ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLS FOR juvenileS IN THE justice system.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2015-2016 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2016-2017 for an alternative school in the Leeward Oahu school district, including appropriate facilities, curriculum, supplies, and the hiring of necessary staff, to facilitate the ongoing education of juveniles in the justice system and other youth, age fourteen and older, who are unable to achieve academic success in a traditional school setting.

     The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $           or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2015-2016 and the same sum or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2016-2017 for an alternative school in the Honolulu school district, including appropriate facilities, curriculum, supplies, and the hiring of necessary staff, to facilitate the ongoing education of juveniles in the justice system and other youth, age fourteen and older, who are unable to achieve academic success in a traditional school setting.

     The sums appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  The department of education shall develop enrollment criteria and a referral and placement process for the alternative schools funded by this Act.

     SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon approval.
