A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

 

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR THE SENIOR FARMERS' MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that the senior farmers' market nutrition program provides low-income seniors with vouchers to exchange for eligible foods at farmers' market, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs.  The senior farmers' market nutrition program has been running continuously since 2000 and has provided over six thousand five hundred of Hawaii's seniors with fresh, nutritious, unprepared locally grown fruits, vegetables, honeys, and herbs.  The program has received $476,632 from the Food and Nutrition Service of the United States Department of Agriculture.

The purpose of this Act is to appropriate funds to the senior farmers' market nutrition program.

SECTION 2.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $500,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2014-2015 for the senior farmers' market nutrition program to provide low-income seniors with vouchers to exchange for eligible foods at farmers' markets, roadside stands, and community supported agriculture programs.

     The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of labor and industrial relations for the purposes of this Act.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2014.
