SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

 

Requesting the board of education, in consultation with the State Librarian, to explore the feasibility of activating a statewide library advisory commission.

 

 


     WHEREAS, a strong public library system contributes to the economic, educational, and cultural vitality of the State; and

 

     WHEREAS, there are fifty library branches in the Hawaii State Public Library System; and

 

     WHEREAS, while the Hawaii State Public Library System hosts programs such as preschool storytimes, storytelling events, author talks, and informational seminars at its facilities, there is the potential to further maximize the use of library facilities; and

 

     WHEREAS, stakeholder input and involvement in the identification of strategic goals and priorities for the library system may allow for greater and more diversified types of uses of library facilities that are appropriate for each community; and

 

     WHEREAS, section 26-12, Hawaii Revised Statutes, gives the Board of Education the authority to establish a library advisory commission in each county to sit in an advisory capacity to the Board of Education on all matters relating to public library services in its respective county; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED that by the Senate of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Board of Education, in consultation with the State Librarian, is requested to explore the feasibility of activating a statewide library advisory commission; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED the Board of Education is requested to report its findings and recommendations, including any proposed legislation and funding needs, to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2014; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to Chair of the Board of Education and the State Librarian of the Hawaii State Public Library System.
