HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

rECOGNIZING KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL FOR ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE IN WINNING THE HAWAII STATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN WINNING THE HAWAII STATE "WE THE PEOPLE: THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION" COMPETITION.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, team competition has tremendous value in our public high schools, both in the fields of athletics and academia, in that such competition fosters group communication skills, collaboration, planning, leadership, and many other useful skills that are transferable to the modern workforce; and

 

WHEREAS, both athletic and academic achievement are reflective of a supportive public school system, dedicated administrators, outstanding teachers, supportive families, active volunteers, and proud communities such as the Kahuku "Red Raider Nation"; and

 

WHEREAS, the KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM is gaining a national reputation for producing standout college and National Football League (NFL) players, with six of the past eight NFL Super Bowls featuring a Kahuku High School graduate; and

 

WHEREAS, the KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM was the 2012 Division I State Champion and had a perfect season in 2012, with twelve wins and no losses; and

 

WHEREAS, coach REGGIE TORRES has demonstrated outstanding leadership by coaching the Kahuku High School Varsity Football Team to become the state champions in 2011 and 2012; and

 

WHEREAS, the "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" is an educational program available to Hawaii public high school students and upper-level elementary school students, and encourages critical thinking about civics by requiring students to submit essays and face a live panel of judges to test their knowledge of the United States Constitution; and

 

WHEREAS, the KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL "WE THE PEOPLE: THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION" TEAM, consisting of fourteen seniors and one junior, won the competition at the state level; and

 

WHEREAS, the KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL "WE THE PEOPLE: THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION" TEAM will represent the State of Hawaii at the national finals, scheduled for April 26 through April 29, 2013 on the campus of George Mason University and in hearing rooms on Capitol Hill; and

 

WHEREAS, JAN HARNEY, the team's advisor, has demonstrated outstanding leadership by preparing the team to win the Hawaii state championship in 2011 and 2012; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-seventh Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2013, that this body hereby recognizes and commends the KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM for outstanding athletic achievement and a perfect 2012 season record, as well as the KAHUKU HIGH SCHOOL "WE THE PEOPLE: THE CITIZEN AND THE CONSTITUTION" TEAM for winning the Hawaii state championship and representing Hawaii in the national finals in Washington, D.C.
