STAND. COM. REP. NO. 603

Honolulu, Hawaii

RE:    S.B. No. 571

Honorable Colleen Hanabusa

President of the Senate

Twenty-Fifth State Legislature

Regular Session of 2009

State of Hawaii

Madam:

Your Committee on Public Safety and Military Affairs, to which was referred S.B. No. 571 entitled:

"A BILL FOR AN ACT RELATING TO A VETERANS' MEMORIAL,"

begs leave to report as follows:

The purpose of this measure is to establish a memorial to pay tribute the veterans of the Persian Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm.

Testimony in support of this measure was submitted by one state agency.  Written testimony presented to the Committee may be reviewed on the Legislature's website.

Your Committee finds that the memorial will pay tribute to and recognize and honor those veterans who sacrificed their lives to fight for our freedom.  This measure requires the Department of Accounting and General Services and the Department of Defense to work together in submitting a report to the Legislature by January 1, 2010, that details their recommendations on the plans for the memorial and its placement within the Capitol District.

As affirmed by the record of votes of the members of your Committee on Public Safety and Military Affairs that is attached to this report, your Committee is in accord with the intent and purpose of S.B. No. 571 and recommends that it pass Second Reading and be placed on the calendar for Third Reading.

Respectfully submitted on behalf of the members of the Committee on Public Safety and Military Affairs,
