HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

congratulating kaiser permanente hawaii on its 50th anniversary, Kapi'olani medical center for women and children on its 100th anniversary, and queen's medical center on its 150th anniversary.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the people of the State of Hawaii are proud to recognize those healthcare institutions that provide quality health care to the people of Hawaii, from keiki to kupuna; and

 

     WHEREAS, founded in 1859 by Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, Queen's Hospital, now known as THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER, is the only hospital in the nation founded by royalty; and

 

     WHEREAS, now the largest private hospital in Hawaii and the Pacific Basin, THE QUEEN’S MEDICAL CENTER has evolved into The Queen’s Health Systems, a multi-corporate organization and one of Hawaii’s largest employers, with over 3,900 employees and nearly 1,100 physicians, with the Queen’s Medical Center serving as its flagship facility; and

 

     WHEREAS, THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER'S hospital-wide philosophy of care is lokomaika'i, meaning "inner health," which is extended to patients, their families, and employees, and integrates the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health care; furthermore, lokomaika'i is an outlook for treating the whole person involving the entire institution; and

 

     WHEREAS, through the concept of lokomaika'i, THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER strives to maintain a values-based organization centered on caring, compassion, and aloha, and the goal of lokomaika'i is to create a harmonious environment which incorporates the vision and ideals of Queen's mission and history, with the latest in medical practices and healing of mind, body, and spirit; and

     WHEREAS, as the leading medical referral center in Hawaii and the Pacific Basin, THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER is widely known for its programs in cancer, cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, orthopedics, surgery, trauma, behavioral medicine, and women’s health, and offers a comprehensive range of specialties, including gastroenterology, genetics, geriatrics, gynecology, neonatology, obstetrics, pulmonology, and radiology; and

 

     WHEREAS, the only trauma center in Hawaii verified by the American College of Surgeons, THE QUEEN’S MEDICAL CENTER serves as the primary teaching hospital for most of the residency programs sponsored by the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine; and

 

     WHEREAS, this year marks the 150th anniversary of THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER, and it continues to bring to life the dream and vision of a young royal couple to provide in perpetuity, quality health care services to improve the well-being of Native Hawaiians and all the people of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, the KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN is Hawaii’s children’s hospital, serving more than 62,000 keiki a year, from premature babies, to pediatric cancer and cardiac patients, and children needing emergency care; and

 

     WHEREAS, Hawaii’s original children’s hospital, Kauikeolani Children’s Hospital, was founded in 1909 as a result of the vision and commitment of dozens of community leaders; a non-profit hospital, it relies on support from the community to continue to provide the care Hawaii’s keiki need and deserve; and

 

     WHEREAS, KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN is recognized as Hawaii's leader in the care of women and children; it features a breast center facility which offers breast health screening, diagnostics, and cancer treatment in a beautiful spa-like setting, a women's cancer center dedicated to the prevention and treatment of gynecological cancers, and is the only hospital in the state specializing in newborn care with physician specialists on-site 24 hours a day; and

     WHEREAS, the only full-service pediatric specialty hospital in the state and for 2,500 miles in any direction, KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN is the hospital where tens of thousands of Americans from all walks of life were born, and continue to be born; its location in Honolulu means that world-class pediatric care is accessible to all of Hawaii’s families, and the state’s most critically ill children can receive the treatment they need without having to travel to the mainland; and

 

     WHEREAS, the major training facility for the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine's Pediatric and OB/GYN residency programs, KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN cares for all children, regardless of their race, religion, or ability to pay; and

 

     WHEREAS, in 2009, KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN is reaching their 100-year milestone in providing exceptional pediatric care to the children and families of Hawaii; and

 

     WHEREAS, KAISER PERMANENTE HAWAII opened its landmark Kaiser Permanente Ala Moana Medical Center on November 13, 1958, which was replaced in 1985 by the state-of-the-art Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center at Red Hill, and currently provides health care through its integrated care model to families at 10 clinics on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island; and

 

     WHEREAS, the famed industrialist Henry J. Kaiser, who built roads and dams; ships and cars; cement, steel, and aluminum plants; and hospitals and hotels, including the Kaiser Hawaiian Village Hotel, now known as the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort & Spa; and the community of Hawaii Kai on Oahu, said:  "Of all the things I've done, I expect only to be remembered for my hospitals.  They're the things that are filling the people's greatest need—good health"; and

 

     WHEREAS, Mr. Kaiser's vision of providing quality care to Hawaii's people has grown over the last half century, and KAISER PERMANENTE HAWAII is now a leading health care system statewide, with 4,500 employees and more than 400 doctors serving 223,000 members, with the goal of making life easier and healthier; and

 

     WHEREAS, KAISER PERMANENTE HAWAII has been keeping people well at every age, from keiki to kupuna, taking a coordinated care team approach—from primary and specialty care—and has pioneered a leading-edge electronic health record system used by its health care professionals and members; and

 

     WHEREAS, KAISER PERMANENTE HAWAII recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of its mission of integrated care infused with the spirit of aloha and, to express its appreciation for the community, held fundraisers for the Hawaii Food Bank on the three islands where health care is delivered, giving away a total of $100,000 in grant monies to organizations across the State; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that this body hereby congratulates KAISER PERMANENTE HAWAII on its 50th Anniversary, KAPI'OLANI MEDICAL CENTER FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN on its 100th Anniversary, and THE QUEEN'S MEDICAL CENTER on its 150th Anniversary, and recognizes these three healthcare institutions for the outstanding healthcare they continue to provide to Hawaii's men, women, and children.
