HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

 

REQUESTING HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO ESTABLISH A COMMUNITY ADVISORY GROUP TO RECOMMEND A NAME FOR THE WEST HAWAII CAMPUS OF HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE, COMMONLY KNOWN AS HAWAII COMMUNITY COLLEGE AT the UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII CENTER, WEST HAWAII CAMPUS.

 

 

 


     WHEREAS, the University of Hawaii Center in West Hawaii is one of three University Centers established by the Board of Regents in June 1996 with administrative responsibility for the center having been given to Hawaii Community College in July 1997; and

 

     WHEREAS, the center currently serves approximately four hundred students from the community of West Hawaii including Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Waikoloa, Kohala, Captain Cook, and Kamuela, and currently the center is situated in rental space inside a shopping center; and

 

     WHEREAS, land has been set aside for Hawaii Community College at the University of Hawaii Center, West Hawaii campus, on property located next to Kona International Airport; and

 

     WHEREAS, the Board of Regents is considering a long range plan for the development of Hawaii Community College, West Hawaii campus, and the design for the first two buildings has been completed; and

 

     WHEREAS, the West Hawaii communities have a distinct regional identity that is unique and integrated with the rest of the Big Island; and

 

     WHEREAS, in recognition of the regional identity, it is important that the community become involved in the support and naming of the campus; now, therefore,

 

     BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that Hawaii Community College is requested to establish a community advisory committee to recommend a name for the Hawaii Community College, West Hawaii campus; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Hawaii Community College is requested to include advisory committee members who are representatives of cultural and history or heritage based organizations, as well as civic, economic, and tourist based organizations, who reside in West Hawaii; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chancellor of the Hawaii Community College is requested to submit the recommended name for the Hawaii Community College, West Hawaii campus to the Board of Regents and Legislature no later than December 31, 2009; and

 

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Chancellor of Hawaii Community College, the President of the University of Hawaii, the members of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, and the Vice President for the Community Colleges.
