H.R. NO.

TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2009

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

urging the president of the united states to establish a western white house in the state of hawaii.

WHEREAS, throughout the history of the United States, past presidents have often maintained residences other than the official presidential residence at the White House in Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, the "Western White House" is a term often applied to additional residences maintained by a President; and

WHEREAS, several former presidents, including Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, maintained a Western White House during their respective administrations; and

WHEREAS, at times during World War II, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii served as a Western White House for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt; and

WHEREAS, many former presidents have utilized a Western White House, not only as a residence, but also as a place to administer their duties as chief executive and to host numerous dignitaries from other nations; and

WHEREAS, the twenty-first century has been referred to as the Pacific Century because of the increasing influence of Pacific Rim countries in international relations and global economics, as well as the build-up of military forces in the region; and

WHEREAS, China and India represent the world's largest and fastest growing populations, and their economies are expected to demonstrate a similar rate of growth; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii's proximity to Asia, close ties with several Asian and Pacific countries, established infrastructure and military presence, and resources such as the East-West Center and the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council make Hawaii the ideal location from which to foster improved relations with all Asian and Pacific countries, meet with foreign delegates, and administer the duties of the chief executive as the world moves into the Pacific Century; and

WHEREAS, appropriate facilities already exist within the State that, in the past, have been used by President Bill Clinton to meet with foreign dignitaries and could be adapted to serve as a Western White House for President Barack Obama; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, that the President of the United States is urged to establish a Western White House in the State of Hawaii; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the President of the United States, the Governor, and the members of Hawaii's congressional delegation.
