TWENTY-FIFTH LEGISLATURE, 2009

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

requesting that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention establish a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease module.

WHEREAS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a progressive disease characterized by a long-lasting obstruction of the airways that occurs with chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both; and

WHEREAS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease affects as many as ten per cent of the world's population older than forty years of age and is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States; and

WHEREAS, to date, there is no cure for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; and

WHEREAS, the federal Division of Adult and Community Health (DACH) is charged with managing programs that provide cross-cutting chronic disease and health promotion expertise and support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and the states, communities, and other partners; and

WHEREAS, the Division of Adult and Community Health also manages several important and high-profile chronic disease prevention and control programs for specific chronic diseases, and is charged with assessing new and emerging chronic disease issues and launching new programs for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion; and

WHEREAS, currently, there are no chronic obstructive pulmonary disease information and research modules at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and

WHEREAS, the creation of a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease module within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will enable information on the potentially debilitating disease to be centralized and coordinated, leading to better sharing of key information and more research and funding for better and effective treatments; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-fifth Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2009, the Senate concurring, that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is respectfully requested to establish a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease module for information and research on effective treatments for the disease; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the members of the Hawaii congressional delegation, the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Director of the Division of Adult and Community Health.
