A BILL FOR AN ACT


 

 

RELATING TO THE STATE VEHICLE WEIGHT TAX.

 

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

 


     SECTION 1.  Chapter 249, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

     "§249-     Exemption for veterans.  One noncommercial motor vehicle registered to a veteran who:

     (1)  Served during World War II and was honorably discharged;

     (2)  Served during the Korean war and was honorably discharged; or

     (3)  Is totally disabled for purposes of employability according to the disability ratings of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs as a result of a service-related injury suffered while on active military duty,

shall be exempt from the vehicle weight tax provided for in this chapter.

     For the purposes of this section, "veteran" means any person who has served in any of the armed services of the United States, or any person who is now a citizen of the United States who has served in any of the armed services of any country that was an ally of the United States in a war or campaign in which the United States was also engaged."

     SECTION 2.  New statutory material is underscored.

     SECTION 3.  This Act shall take effect July 1, 2009.
