A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES FOR AKULE FISH MONITORING.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that to understand akule fish activity, there is a need to collect and interpret data about akule fish movements and habits of migration from Pearl harbor to Kaena point, Oahu.

SECTION 2.  The department of land and natural resources, division of aquatic resources, shall increase the number of commercial catch reporting grids from two to three along the western coast of Oahu in the sector between Barber's point and Kaena point by creating a new catch grid spanning the area between Maile point and Kepuhi point.  The new grid shall incorporate sections of the current 402 and 403 catch grids, such that 402 will be reduced to cover only the area from Barber's point to Maile point, and 403 will be reduced to cover only the area from Kepuhi point to Kaena point.

SECTION 3.  There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $25,000 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008-2009 for the department of land and natural resources, in conjunction with the Hawaii institute of marine biology, to hire a contractor to tag and monitor akule fish along the leeward coast of Oahu from Pearl harbor to Kaena point, as more fully described in section 2.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources, in conjunction with the Hawaii institute of marine biology, for the purposes of this Act.
