A BILL FOR AN ACT

relating to water systems.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1.  The legislature finds that water in our island State is a precious and depletable resource that is necessary for the maintenance of not just all living things but also our natural environment.  This is a resource that must be maintained not just today but for future generations.

The purpose of this Act is to encourage the conservation of water by encouraging the use of private water catchment systems for non-potable uses.

SECTION 2.  Chapter 54, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§54-    Private water catchment systems.  Any person with a legal water meter issued by a board of water supply may also maintain and operate a private water catchment system for non-potable water uses."

SECTION 3.  New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4.  This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
