REGULAR SESSION OF 2005

COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, CONSUMER PROTECTION, AND HOUSING

Senator Ron Menor, Chair

Senator Rosalyn H. Baker, Vice Chair

NOTICE OF INFORMATIONAL BRIEFING

DATE:

Tuesday, April 25, 2006

TIME:

5:00 p.m.

PLACE:

Auditorium

State Capitol

415 South Beretania Street

A G E N D A

The purpose of this briefing is to provide the public with a comprehensive overview of the issues related to the decision by the state’s largest insurer to discontinue selling hurricane insurance on a large segment of homes in the state, namely homes with single-wall construction, those built before 1981 that have not been retrofitted with hurricane clips to meet 1993 or 1994 building codes, and homes located within 2,500 feet of the ocean without flood insurance -- even if they are not in a flood zone.

The committee will seek comment from the Hawaii State Insurance Commissioner, Zephyr Insurance, representatives of other insurance companies providing hurricane and homeowners insurance, the Honolulu Board of Realtors, homeowners who might be affected by a change in the criteria for issuing hurricane insurance policies to homeowners, and all members of the public with an interest in the issue of hurricane insurance.

Those submitting written testimony should provide 25 copies to the committee clerk at least 24 hours prior to the briefing.

If you require special assistance or auxiliary aids or services to participate in the public hearing process (i.e., sign language interpreter, wheelchair accessibility, or parking designated for the disabled) please contact the committee clerk 24 hours prior to the hearing so arrangements can be made.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CALL THE COMMITTEE CLERK AT 586-6740.
