HOUSE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

ENCOURAGING THE HAWAII COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY TO LEASE THE ALA MOANA PUMP STATION TO FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY OF HAWAII.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii, formerly known as the Honolulu Library and Reading Room, was founded in 1879 by prominent business leaders, merchants, and Hawaiian royalty; and

WHEREAS, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii is a respected and thriving nonprofit organization with 28 affiliates staffed by hundreds of volunteers at local libraries statewide; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Friends of the Library of Hawaii is to promote the extension of library services while ensuring these services are free to the public; and

WHEREAS, in 2005, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii raised over $260,000 in their annual book sale used to enhance the cultural and educational opportunities for public library users; and

WHEREAS, the Friends of the Library of Hawaii currently share a state warehouse space that is inadequate to optimize the processing, storage, and reselling of books and is in dire need of a permanent home; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Community Development Association is overseeing the challenging task of deciding the best use for the space around the Ala Moana Pump Station in Kakaako; and

WHEREAS, members of the community have shown support for utilizing the space for services and activities dedicated to the benefit of the community as a whole; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2006, the Senate concurring, that the Hawaii Community Development Authority is encouraged to lease the Ala Moana Pump Station located in Kakaako to Friends of the Library of Hawaii for an annual fee of $1.00 for as long as this nonprofit organization remain in existence; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Friends of the Library of Hawaii will preserve this historic site through careful conversion as home of the Friends of the Library to include office space, conference rooms, book processing facilities, and a retail operation; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all funding for this renovation and preservation process will be provided for by Friends of the Library of Hawaii; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of the Hawaii Community Development Authority.
