HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.B. NO.

2530

TWENTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE, 2006

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR PLANning, design, and construction OF THE KAILUA-KONA SENIOR CENTER IN KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The senior community in the Kailua-Kona area has undergone exponential growth in the recent past. Due to the shortage of facilities in this growing community of older persons, services are lacking in this area. A multipurpose center would serve as a single point of service delivery for seniors living in the North Kona community. The multipurpose senior center would offer recreation and cultural activities, congregate meals, adult education and literacy classes, legal services, health care services, transportation, information and assistance, and a community kitchen. The facility is estimated to cost about $9,000,000. Approximately $900,000 would be needed for the planning and design phase of the project.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $9,000,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2006-2007, as a grant-in-aid to the county of Hawaii for the planning, design, and construction of a multipurpose senior center in Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawaii pursuant to section 1.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the county of Hawaii for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2006.
