SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

recognizing the flag of the former republic of vietnam as a heritage and freedom flag of the vietnamese-american community of the state of hawaii.

 

 

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii is the residence of a multitude of ethnic cultures from around the world, making it a melting pot of world cultures; and

WHEREAS, many ethnic Vietnamese who fled the communist regime during the 1960s and 1970s to come to Hawaii are now naturalized American citizens; and

WHEREAS, although American citizens, many of these ethnic Vietnamese, like other ethnic groups to emigrate to Hawaii, still wish to preserve their own culture and heritage; and

WHEREAS, all ethnic Vietnamese in this State have contributed to the multi-cultural heritage and economy of Hawaii for generations and will continue to contribute for generations to come; and

WHEREAS, the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam, which is also the traditional flag recognized by the United Nations in 1948, and which consists of three horizontal red stripes on a field of gold, symbolizes for the ethnic Vietnamese in Hawaii their freedom, ethnic culture and heritage, and their economic contribution to the State and thus is a symbol of State's ethnic Vietnamese-American community; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Legislature hereby recognizes the flag of the former Republic of Vietnam as the Traditional Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag and as a symbol of the Vietnamese-American community in Hawaii; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the American Vietnamese Coalition of Hawaii.
