HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING AS THE Recipient of the 2004 Alpha Gamma Delta Distinguished Citizen Award.

 

 

WHEREAS, while the natural beauty of Hawaii is recognized throughout the world, the real beauty of our island state lies in its people who, through their personal relationships with their families, friends, and neighbors, and through their dedicated efforts to serve the needs of the people of Hawaii, have created the prosperity and high standards of living that we all enjoy; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Gamma Delta is an international fraternity founded in 1904 for women dedicated to academic excellence, leadership development, high ideals, and sisterhood; and

WHEREAS, Alpha Gamma Delta presents the Alpha Gamma Delta Distinguished Citizen Award biannually to alumni members of the fraternity for exceptional and outstanding contributions in their professions or in civic, organizational, cultural, or charitable work, through which they have brought recognition to the fraternity; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING is a graduate from the University of Hawaii whose career in education dates back to 1963, when she became a teacher with the Department of Education; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING devoted most of the rest of her career to service at the University of Hawaii, including chairing the Education and International Division of the Pacific International Center for High Tech Research, serving as Associate Dean of the College of Education, and teaching and serving as Vice-President for Student Affairs, which she continues to do today; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING has left indelible impressions on her students, evidenced by their high commendations for her when she was nominated and appointed to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING's other professional activities have included writing and publishing dozens of documents, articles, book reviews, and editorials; serving as a consultant for the Department of Education, the Instrument for the Observation of Teaching Activities Program, and the Pacific Island Nations; serving on the Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education; and serving as President of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Foundation; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING has contributed her time and talent in many venues outside of her profession, including serving on the Board of Managers of Sacred Hearts Academy, Board of Trustees of the Hawaii Veterans Memorial Scholarships, Hawaii Commission on National Community Service, Soroptimist International of Honolulu, and the Hawaii Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING's distinctions include being the first female University of Hawaii vice-president and the first professional from Hawaii and first Asian-American president of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, consisting of more than 9,000 members; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING has received numerous awards, including the Women in Communications Headliner Award, University of Hawaii Manager of the Year, University of Hawaii Alumni Association Distinguished Alumna Award, National Association of Student Professional Administrators Foundation "Pillar of the Profession" Designation, and Hawaii Alumnae Panhellenic Outstanding Woman Leader; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of her selfless devotion and dedication to the community, her passion and commitment to her work with the University of Hawaii, and for enhancing the educational experience of students by providing the direction and guidance needed to help them achieve success in life, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING has been selected to receive the 2004 Alpha Gamma Delta Distinguished Citizen Award and has been presented with the award at an International Convention; and

WHEREAS, DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING, whose notable accomplishments have garnered the respect of her peers and who has distinguished herself within our community and among current and future alumna of Delta Sigma Chapter as an outstanding example of individual commitment to excellence, is an unsung hero who does not seek recognition or praise for her efforts, but instead reaps the rewards that come simply from being herself, making her a well-deserving recipient of such a prestigious award; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-third Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2005, that this body hereby recognizes and congratulates DORIS MICHIKO YAMAUCHI CHING as the recipient of the 2004 Alpha Gamma Delta Distinguished Citizen Award, and extends to her its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
