Iceland – The Hydrogen Island
Hydrogenizing Islands
Presenter: |
Professor Thorsteinn Sigfusson Chairman of the Board of Directors, Icelandic New Energy Co-Chair, International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy |
Professor Sigfusson will discuss the Icelandic experience, and opportunities for Pacific islands in advancing towards a hydrogen based economy.
The mission of Icelandic New Energy (INE) is to "investigate the potential for eventually replacing the use of fossil fuels in Iceland with hydrogen and create the world’s first hydrogen economy". INE is a unique business arrangement between the Icelandic government and the private sector interests to accomplish this transformation. The International Partnership for the Hydrogen Economy (IPHE) is a mechanism to organize and implement effective, efficient, and focused research, and to develop and deploy activities that advance hydrogen and fuel cell programs. The coordination instituted through the IPHE leverage limited resources and bring together world’s best intellects and talents to solve difficult challenges to making the hydrogen economy a reality. In November 2003, U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Abraham hosted the inaugural meeting of the IPHE in Washington, D.C. Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, the European Communities, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Norway, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States formalized their membership in the IPHE by signing the terms of reference.
