THE SENATE

S.R. NO.

9

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2004

STATE OF HAWAII

SENATE RESOLUTION

requesting the department of education to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of central kitchens for the department of education.

WHEREAS, one of the primary advantages of having a single statewide public educational system is that it provides for equitable spending and the potential for economies of scale; and

WHEREAS, one way of capitalizing on these advantages might be by establishing one or more central kitchens for the department of education; and

WHEREAS, this might entail, for example, a high school that provides meals for its feeder schools; and

WHEREAS, this logistical strategy has been effectively used in conjunction with flash freezing in the federal detention center; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that the Department of Education, with the assistance of the Department of Accounting and General Services, is requested to conduct a feasibility study on the establishment of central kitchens for the Department of Education and to report findings and recommendations to the Legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2005; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Superintendent of Education, the Chairperson of the Board of Education, and the Comptroller.
