SENATE RESOLUTION

 

REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING AND GENERAL SERVICES TO DESIGN AND ERECT AN ATTRACTIVE AND APPROPRIATE SIGNAGE for THE KOREAN VIETNAM VETERANS MEMORIAL ON THE GROUNDS OF THE STATE CAPITOL.

 

WHEREAS, Korean Vietnam Veterans Memorial, located on the grounds of the State Capitol fronting Richards Street, was dedicated in 1994; and

WHEREAS, the Korean Vietnam Veterans Memorial contains the names etched in marble, one plaque for each person, of all U.S. military personnel from Hawaii who were killed or missing in action in the Korean and Vietnam wars; and

WHEREAS, there are 454 plaques from the Korean War and 312 from the Vietnam War; and

WHEREAS, these brave combat heroes are Hawaii native sons and daughters who gave their life in the name of freedom and democracy; and

WHEREAS, the Korean Vietnam Veterans Memorial, recessed into the earth and cloaked by ferns, trees, and other greenery, is easy to miss; and

WHEREAS, there is no obvious marker, signage, or other indicator that the site is the Korean Vietnam Veterans Memorial; and

WHEREAS, an appropriate and respectful tribute to the heroes whose names are etched in marble would be to have an attractive and appropriate signage for the Korean Vietnam Veterans Memorial; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that the Department of Accounting and General Services is requested to design and erect an appropriate and attractive monument of the Korean Vietnam Veterans Memorial; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Accounting and General Services report to the Legislature on the status and progress of erecting a monument no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2005; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the Comptroller, and Office of Veterans Services for transmittal to the appropriate veterans organizations.
