SENATE RESOLUTION

 

supporting the rebuilding and refurbishing of student housing at the university of hawaii.

WHEREAS, the 91st Senate of the Associated Students of be University of Hawaii at Manoa (ASUH) is the elected body representing over 10,000 undergraduate students; and

WHEREAS, the ASUH recognizes student housing as a key component to the overall welfare of the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and

WHEREAS, the ASUH acknowledges that $33,814,016 in deferred maintenance has accumulated at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and

WHEREAS, the following total repair costs have been deferred through fiscal year 2008 in these student housing complexes: Hale Anuenue, $847,208; International Gateway House, $4,204,111; Hale Aloha, $12,194,168; Hale Kahawai, $1,405,357; Laulima, $1,750,898; Hale Noelani, $5,259,691; and Hale Wainani, $8,152,583; and

WHEREAS, ASUH is concerned about the safety, health, and well-being of the students living in the current student complexes; and

WHEREAS, ASUH feels that it is unrealistic and impractical to refurbish Frear Hall and Johnson Hall; and

WHEREAS, the student housing office has been forced to contract hotel space in response to the overflow of student applicants for student housing; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that Frear Hall and Johnson Hall should be demolished and rebuilt to accommodate increasing undergraduate student demand for on-campus housing; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that funding be appropriated to refurbish other existing housing complexes, which totals $33,814,016 through fiscal year 2008; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor, Chair of the Board of Regents of the University of Hawaii, and President of the University of Hawaii.
