RESOLUTION
ENCOURAGING THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO SET UP WORKSHOPS FOR HAIR STYLISTS TO EDUCATE THEIR CUSTOMERS ON HEALTH ISSUES.
WHEREAS, most hair stylists usually establish a client base of return customers who they also befriend; and
WHEREAS, hair stylists share a unique relationship with their clients, not only counseling them on the current fashion trends, but also discussing their personal lives; and
WHEREAS, often hair stylists may be the only ones their clients discuss their personal problems with to seek advice; and
WHEREAS, hair stylists are in a unique position to counsel clients regarding health issues including breast self-exams, HIV testing, smoking, early childhood education, or prevention of domestic violence; and
WHEREAS, the Vermont Department of Health has established the program Operation Hairspray, which is an all-day workshop on ways of getting healthy messages out to women; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the House of Representatives concurring, to encourage the Department of Health to establish workshops for hair stylists to be a resource for their customers regarding health issues; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Director of Health.
