SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

Requesting the employees' Retirement system of the state of hawaii and the department of budget and finance TO study granting service credit to former peace corps volunteers.

 

WHEREAS, since 1961, when President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps to promote world peace and friendship, over one hundred seventy thousand Americans of all ages have volunteered their time to work in one hundred thirty-seven different foreign countries; and

WHEREAS, these ambassadors of good will have served their country by working in developing countries in the following areas: education, health, including HIV/AIDS, environment, business development, agriculture, including fisheries, and youth development; and

WHEREAS, Peace Corps Volunteers have served in environments that were hazardous to their health and, at times, posed risk of physical injury; and

WHEREAS, public employees who are members of the Employees' Retirement System of the State of Hawaii who have served honorably in the armed services of the United States are given an opportunity to be credited with membership credit for active military service; and

WHEREAS, among the members of the retirement system are former Peace Corps volunteers who have also served this country; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Board of Trustees of the Employees' Retirement System of the State of Hawaii and the Department of Budget and Finance are requested to study the feasibility of allowing members of the retirement system who are former Peace Corps volunteers to be credited with membership service credit for time served as a member of the Peace Corps; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Employees' Retirement System of the State of Hawaii and the Director of Finance are requested to report findings and recommendations to the Legislature twenty days before the convening of the Regular Session of 2005; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Employees' Retirement System of the State of Hawaii and the Director of Finance.
