SENATE CONCURRENT

RESOLUTION

 

urging the renaming of Heeia state park to Lae 'O Kealohi state park.

 

WHEREAS, Heeia State Park is a small park on the windward side of Oahu; and

WHEREAS, Heeia State Park has been designated as an "interpretative park" offering programs to the community and visitors with an interest in Hawaiian beliefs and culture; and

WHEREAS, it is vital to preserve Hawaiian culture and history; and

WHEREAS, using ancient Hawaiian place names is an essential part of preserving Hawaiian culture and history of the places in Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, Heeia State Park is located on a spirit of land with a lighthouse at the point; and

WHEREAS, Lae 'O Kealohi, which means the shine or brightness, refers to the area that is located on that point of the park; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the Twenty-Second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the House of Representatives concurring, that the Department of Land and Natural Resources is requested to rename Heeia State Park to Lae 'O Kealohi state park in order to restore the ancient place name and to reflect the historical use of the area; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a certified copy of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to the Chairperson of the Board of Land and Natural Resources.
