A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to the employee's retirement system for emergency medical technicians.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 88, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§88- Emergency medical technicians; unreduced allowance on service retirement. Notwithstanding section 88-281 to the contrary, if a member has at least twenty-five years of credited service as an emergency medical technician, of which the last five or more years prior to retirement is credited service in that capacity, then the emergency medical technician shall be eligible to receive a retirement benefit unreduced for age after the member has terminated service; provided that the emergency medical technician:

(1) Whose credited service began after 1971 and before 1975 shall retire no earlier than July 1, 2003;

(2) Whose credited service began after 1974 and before 1979 shall retire no earlier than July 1, 2004;

(3) Whose credited service began after 1978 and before 1982 shall retire no earlier than September 1, 2005; and

(4) Whose credited service began in or after 1982 shall retire no earlier than July 1, 2006."

SECTION 2. Section 88-21, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new definition to be appropriately inserted and to read as follows:

""Emergency medical technician" means any regularly employed member of any county of the State licensed to provide emergency medical services."

SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2003.
