A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to tuition waivers for native hawaiians.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 304, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§304- Hawaiians; tuition waiver. (a) The University of Hawaii board of regents shall waive all tuition fees for native Hawaiian students, in addition to other tuition waivers that may be granted by the board of regents.

(b) As used in this section, "native Hawaiian" means any descendent of the aboriginal peoples inhabiting the Hawaiian islands that:

(1) Exercised sovereignty and subsisted in the Hawaiian islands in 1778; and

(2) Have continued to reside in Hawaii since 1778."

SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
