A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to charter schools.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to part IV, subpart D, to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A- E-charter school; enrollment and residency requirements. (a) Any student who is eighteen years of age or younger may enroll in an e-charter school, subject to the following provisions:
(1) The student physically resides within the State; or
(2) The student's parents or guardians physically reside within the State; or
(3) The student's parents or guardians are residing within the State while serving in the armed forces of the United States;
provided that a student may remain enrolled in an e-charter school while temporarily absent from the State if the student intends to return to the State prior to completion of the student's educational program.
(b) As used in this section "e-charter school" is a new century charter school in which the primary medium of instruction between teacher and student is long-distance communication through computer or other electronic device."
SECTION 2. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
