A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

RELATING TO PALLIATIVE CARE EDUCATION.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 453, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§453- Continuing education; palliative care. The board of medical examiners shall conduct a mandatory continuing education program in palliative care for licensees under this chapter.

As used in this section, "palliative care" means the active total care of patients at a time when their disease is no longer responsive to curative or disease modifying measures and when control of pain and other symptoms and of psychological, social, and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is the highest possible quality of life for the patient and family."

SECTION 2. Chapter 457, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§457- Continuing education; palliative care. The state board of nursing shall conduct a mandatory continuing education program in palliative care for licensees under this chapter.

"§460- Continuing education; palliative care. The board of osteopathic examiners shall conduct a mandatory continuing education program in palliative care for licensees under this chapter.

As used in this section, "palliative care" means the active total care of patients at a time when their disease is no longer responsive to curative or disease modifying measures and when control of pain and other symptoms and of psychological, social, and spiritual problems is paramount. The goal of palliative care is the highest possible quality of life for the patient and family."

SECTION 4. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 5. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
