A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to teachers.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:

"§302A-   Teachers; employment term. The employment term of not more than five per cent of full-time, classroom teachers in department schools, based on classroom teachers as defined by the department, shall be not less than eleven months annually, provided that:

(1) Not less than one of those months is dedicated to not less than twenty days of planning and professional development; and

(2) This section shall not affect any collective bargaining agreements in effect at the time of the effective date of this section."

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $          , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, for the funding of an extension of the employment terms of teachers to eleven months as provided in this Act.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. New statutory material is underscored.

SECTION 5. This Act shall take effect upon its approval; provided that sections 2 and 3 shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
