Appropriation; Coqui Frogs

Description:

Appropriates funds to eradicate the coqui frog on Maui.

THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

3206

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2004

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

MAKING AN APPROPRIATION TO ERADICATE THE COQUI FROG ON MAUI.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the coqui frog produces a loud, piercing mating call that causes restless nights for residents and visitors. The already loud, irritating noise is exacerbated by the sheer numbers of coqui frogs that have grown in the past few years. The coqui frog has become not only a significant threat to the island's extremely fragile ecosystems, but they also threaten Maui's tourist-based economy.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $500,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, to eradicate the coqui frog on the island of Maui.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of agriculture for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
