A BILL FOR AN ACT
making an appropriation for AIEA INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The legislature notes that national studies indicate that the number of intermediate school students who are overweight is on the rise. Further, excessive weight in children of this age group has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease in adulthood. To address this growing problem, children must not only develop proper dietary habits, but also learn about the importance of daily physical activity and exercise on a regular basis. Physical education classes taught at intermediate schools are vital to accomplishing this purpose.
The legislature finds that the physical education courts at Aiea intermediate school have fallen into a state of disrepair and need to be replaced. As a result of the dilapidated condition of these courts, the students at Aiea intermediate are unable to use them during their physical education classes because of safety concerns. These courts not only assist physical education instructors at Aiea intermediate school in teaching the importance of physical fitness to these students, but also improve their self-esteem by encouraging further participation in organized sports.
The purpose of this Act is to appropriate moneys for the repair and construction of the physical education courts at Aiea intermediate school.
SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $350,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, for the repair and construction of the physical education courts at Aiea intermediate school.
SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of education for the purposes of this Act.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
