A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to shark monitoring.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the incidence of shark attacks in the State is increasing. In order to understand these attacks, the State needs to collect and interpret data of shark migratory movements and habits.

The purpose of this Act is to require the department of agriculture's aquaculture development program to conduct a study on shark migratory activity along the leeward coast of Oahu from Ewa Beach to Kaena Point by tagging sharks and monitoring their movements.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $ , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, for the aquaculture development program to conduct a study of shark migratory activity along the leeward coast of Oahu from Ewa Beach to Kaena Point by tagging sharks and monitoring their movements.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of agriculture for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. The department of agriculture's aquaculture development program shall submit a report of its findings and recommendations on shark migratory activity to the legislature not later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2005.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
