A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to shark monitoring.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that the incidence of shark attacks in the State is increasing. To understand these attacks, the State needs to collect and interpret data on shark migratory movements and habits.

The purpose of this Act is to require the aquatic resources division of the department of land and natural resources to conduct a study on shark migratory activity along the Leeward coast of Oahu, from Ewa Beach to Kaena Point, by tagging sharks and monitoring their movements.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $1 or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005 for the aquatic resources division of the department of land and natural resources to conduct a study of shark migratory activity along the Leeward coast of Oahu, from Ewa Beach to Kaena Point, by tagging sharks and monitoring their movements.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of land and natural resources for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. The aquatic resources division of the department of land and natural resources shall submit a report of its findings and recommendations on shark migratory activity to the legislature no later than twenty days prior to the convening of the regular session of 2005.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2010.
