A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

relating to shark monitoring.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that there are growing incidents of shark attacks in this State. In order to understand shark activity, there is a need to collect and interpret data from their movements and habits of their migration.

The purpose of this Act is to have the department of agriculture's aquaculture development program conduct a study of shark activity along the Leeward coast by tagging them and monitoring their movements.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $25,000, or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, for the aquaculture development program to tag and monitor sharks along the Leeward coast from Kalaeloa to Kaena Point.

The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of agriculture for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
