A BILL FOR AN ACT
relating to the board of education.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. Board of education members often seem far removed from the communities that they serve. In order to heighten their responsiveness and accountability to these communities, there needs to be an avenue for direct input by the community to the board of education.
The purpose of this Act is to requires board of education members to hold quarterly meetings in their geographic area of representation.
SECTION 2. Chapter 302A, Hawaii Revised Statutes, is amended by adding a new section to be appropriately designated and to read as follows:
"§302A- Board of education; members; quarterly meetings. Board of education members shall hold quarterly meetings in their geographic area of representation; provided that these meetings shall include school complex leaders and shall be open to the community. At-large members may hold their meetings at any school of their choice; provided that at least one quarterly meeting per year shall be held at a school located outside of Oahu."
SECTION 3. New statutory material is underscored.
SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
