THE SENATE

S.B. NO.

2004

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2004

S.D. 1

STATE OF HAWAII

A BILL FOR AN ACT

making an appropriation for veterans cemeteries.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. The legislature finds that veterans cemeteries serve as a means to honor those qualified veterans and their dependents who have so admirably served their country in the armed forces of the United States. However, the intended tribute to these individuals is diminished by the lack of care and adequate funding provided to the veterans cemeteries throughout the State, evinced by the fact that repair and maintenance costs exceed current funding levels.

The legislature further finds that the cost of the repair and maintenance of the veterans cemeteries in the county of Maui has increased by one hundred and ninety-two per cent from 1981 to 2003, although state assistance has only increased by eleven per cent during that same period.

The purpose of this Act is to provide adequate funding for the care and maintenance of veterans cemeteries in the county of Maui.

SECTION 2. There is appropriated out of the general revenues of the State of Hawaii the sum of $          , or so much thereof as may be necessary for fiscal year 2004-2005, for the care and maintenance of veterans cemeteries in the county of Maui.

SECTION 3. The sum appropriated shall be expended by the department of defense for the purposes of this Act.

SECTION 4. This Act shall take effect on July 1, 2004.
