A BILL FOR AN ACT

 

RELATING TO CONGRESSWOMAN PATSY T. MINK.

 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF HAWAII:

SECTION 1. United States Congresswoman Patsy Takemoto Mink was an outstanding American, an outstanding woman, and an outstanding resident of Hawaii. She was the first Japanese-American woman elected to the house of representatives in the territorial legislature, the first Japanese-American woman elected to the senate in the territorial legislature, and the first Asian-American woman elected to Congress. She served in the Department of State and as chair of the Honolulu city council. She authored landmark legislation, such as the Title IX of the Higher Education Act, now renamed the "Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act" and the State's landmark equal pay for equal work law. She was a tireless champion of the American ideals of freedom, equality, civil rights, and peace.

The purpose of this Act is to require the state foundation on culture and the arts to commission a work of art honoring the late Patsy Mink.

SECTION 2. The state foundation on culture and the arts, with input from the comptroller, shall commission a work of art honoring the late Congresswoman Patsy T. Mink, to be funded by the works of art special fund under section 103-8.5, Hawaii Revised Statutes.

SECTION 3. This Act shall take effect upon its approval.
