HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

requesting the department of education to conduct a feasibility study for a new middle school in the upcountry area of maui.

 

 

WHEREAS, the Kalama Intermediate School services students from the communities of Makawao, Pa`ia, Kula, Pukalani, and Haiku; and

WHEREAS, current enrollment figures show that the school is operating close to capacity; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Hawaiian Homelands constructed 318 homes in the areas that Kalama Intermediate School services; and

WHEREAS, whereas approximately half of those homes are expected to be occupied by the summer of 2004; and

WHEREAS, with the additional anticipated number of children enrolling in Kalama Intermediate School, the school is expected to be operating above capacity for the 2004-2005 school year; and

WHEREAS, the surrounding areas may be experiencing an increase in development and housing in the coming years; and

WHEREAS, such development would bring more children into the area, and increased enrollment at Kalama Intermediate School; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that the House of Representatives requests the Department of Education to conduct a study to determine the need for a new middle school in the Upcountry area of Maui; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Education submit the study to the legislature and the representative of the 12th representative district no later than twenty days prior to the opening of the 2005 Regular Session; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Department of Education, the Board of Education, the superintendent of education, and the Governor.
