HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

48

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2004

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

URGING THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY TO SPONSOR A STATEWIDE CONFERENCE ON TOURISM IN HAWAII.

WHEREAS, tourism is Hawaii's largest industry, generating approximately $10,000,000,000 in revenues for the State; and

WHEREAS, tourism arrivals to Hawaii have been relatively flat for the past five years; and

WHEREAS, Hawaii is facing increasingly strong competition from other world destinations; and

WHEREAS, the Hawaii Tourism Authority in 2003 divided Hawaii's travel marketing among five different contractors (Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Dentsu, Walshes World, Marketing Garden, and Magnum Group); and

WHEREAS, this new separation of marketing responsibilities has caused some confusion in the travel industry, both here in Hawaii and abroad; and

WHEREAS, there is concern within the community that Hawaii is losing its famed Aloha Spirit; and

WHEREAS, many feel that Hawaiian culture, music, and hula should be emphasized to a greater extent in promoting the islands; and

WHEREAS, the last statewide tourism conference was held nearly ten years ago in 1994; and

WHEREAS, it is very important that all the citizens of Hawaii and stakeholders in the tourism industry be given the opportunity to express their ideas and concerns regarding Hawaii's largest industry; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that the Hawaii Tourism Authority is urged to hold a statewide conference on tourism in 2004 and present its findings and recommendations to the Legislature twenty days prior to the convening of the Regular Session of 2005; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the Governor; the Mayor of each county; the Director of Transportation; the Director of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism; the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii; and the Chair of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, who in turn is requested to transmit copies to the major market contractors of the Hawaii Tourism Authority and to major travel marketing organizations.
