HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

commending and congratulating waikiki aquarium on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

 

 

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii has a unique location in the Pacific, offering a rich and abundant assemblage of marine life; and

WHEREAS, on March 19, 1904, the WAIKIKI AQUARIUM began as The Honolulu Aquarium, and has since successfully fulfilled its desire to protect the ocean through education, research, and conservation, and display to the world the riches of Hawaii's reefs; and

WHEREAS, over the past 100 years the WAIKIKI AQUARIUM has developed into a facility that boasts the oldest and potentially largest collection of living corals in the United States, and remains the third oldest aquarium in the nation, home to over 2,500 animals representing more than 420 species of aquatic animals and plants; and

WHEREAS, the WAIKIKI AQUARIUM was the first in the world to exhibit the Hawaiian monk seal and the first in the nation to exhibit and hatch nautilus, exhibit and propagate Pacific corals, exhibit giant clams, blacktip sharks, and cuttlefish, and raise seven generations of mahimahi; and

WHEREAS, the WAIKIKI AQUARIUM has been the recipient of numerous nationally-recognized awards including the Munson Aquatic Conservation Exhibit Award for its "South Pacific Marine Communities" exhibit, the Edward H. Bean Award for its "Long Term Tropical Pacific Coral Propagation Program," and has been designated as the Coastal Ecosystem Learning Center for the Pacific Island Region of the Coastal America Partnership; and

WHEREAS, through a commitment to excellence in educational and entertaining experiences, research, and conservation, the WAIKIKI AQUARIUM has continued to help people of all ages to understand, love, care for, and work to protect the life of the ocean; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body hereby commends and congratulates the WAIKIKI AQUARIUM on the fine occasion of its 100th Anniversary, and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors as one of the nation's most distinctive ocean centers; and
