HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

H.R. NO.

37

TWENTY-SECOND LEGISLATURE, 2004

STATE OF HAWAII

HOUSE RESOLUTION

DECLARING 3:00 PM EVERY MEMORIAL DAY AS THE NATIONAL MOMENT OF REMEMBRANCE IN HAWAII, TO REMEMBER AMERICA'S FALLEN ARMED SERVICE MEMBERS IN AN ACT OF NATIONAL UNITY.

WHEREAS, Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day which began in the 1800s, is a day to remember those American men and women who died in the service of our country to preserve the peace and liberty of this nation; and

WHEREAS, the State of Hawaii has designated the last Monday in May of every year as a State holiday for the observance of Memorial Day; and

WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii are thankful to live in a free nation and honor not only those who gave their lives for this blessing, but all our veterans, and those who still serve in our armed forces today in a continuing struggle to protect our way of life; and

WHEREAS, many Americans have forgotten the meaning behind Memorial Day, and only 28 percent of Americans know its purpose, according to a recent Gallup Poll survey; and

WHEREAS, the people of Hawaii should not forget the reasons for Memorial Day, especially since so much of our local and national history finds its roots in the Pearl Harbor Memorial, where still lies many of those who died to defend the United States and its people in that infamous attack; and

WHEREAS, the White House Commission on Remembrance was established by Congress to put the "memorial" back in Memorial Day, and asks all Americans to pause for a National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 PM local time in recognition of America's fallen; and

WHEREAS, the National Moment of Remembrance is not intended to replace traditional Memorial Day observances throughout the country, but is intended to be a unifying act for Americans of all ages; and

WHEREAS, during this Moment, every person should pause from whatever they are doing, wherever they are and whomever they are with, enjoying their freedom made possible by those who died to ensure our liberty, to observe in their own way a moment of silence and respect; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, the Senate concurring, that 3:00 PM on the last Monday in May of every year, which has been declared Memorial Day, a state holiday, be designated as the National Moment of Remembrance in Hawaii, in which the State of Hawaii will participate with the rest of the country in this noble act of national unity; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this Concurrent Resolution be transmitted to Hawaii's Congressional Delegation, the White House Commission on Remembrance, and the Governor.
