HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

CONGRATULATING ASIAN AFFAIRS LEADERS FRANK BOAS, LISA T. MURAYAMA, GERALD SUMIDA, BRENDA LEI FOSTER, AND DIANE PETERS-NGUYEN ON THE OCCASION OF THE PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY

 

WHEREAS, since 1954 the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL has continuously fostered foreign affairs awareness with special attention to Hawaii's role in the Asia-Pacific region, serving as the local coordinator for the International Visitor Program of the United States State Department and inviting foreign leaders to the United States to exchange valuable knowledge with their American counterparts; and

WHEREAS, the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL conducts educational outreach programs in Hawaii public and private high schools by offering opportunities such as travel scholarships so that students can enhance their knowledge about critical global issues; and

WHEREAS, the International Outreach Project, which was transferred to the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL in 1993, was established by the Pacific Rim Foundation with the University of Hawaii Community Colleges, and works to increase the knowledge of intercultural issues within community colleges and colleges throughout the state; and

WHEREAS, Frank Boas, Board of Governors President, who, for over 15 years has demonstrated his strong commitment as a PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL benefactor, annually funding the organization's Boas Travel Scholarship, which allows public high school students to attend summer study abroad programs; and

WHEREAS, Lisa T. Murayama, Executive Director for the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL, who, for over 6 years, has devoted her professional time and effort to global education, membership development, public relations, program development and implementation; and

WHEREAS, Gerald Sumida, Past Board of Governors President, had been an active PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL participant since his high school days, president of the board from 1882 to1991, chairman for the next 5 years, and currently a Senior Advisory Council member, dedicated to improving global education in the State of Hawaii; and

WHEREAS, Brenda Lei Foster, Past Executive Director for the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL, had cultivated relationships with government agencies and internationally-oriented institutes throughout the United States and the Asia-Pacific region from 1977 to 1992; and

WHEREAS, Diane Peters-Nguyen, Past Executive Director for the PACIFIC AND ASIAN AFFAIRS COUNCIL, had worked with community groups, schools and extensively with the Hawaii State Legislature from 1993 to 1997; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body congratulates Frank Boas, Gerald Sumida,

Lisa T. Murayama, Brenda Lei Foster, and Diane Peters-Nguyen on the occasion of the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council's 50th Anniversary, and offers its heartfelt wishes and aloha to them for many more successful years of service.
