HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

recognizing jonathan cowles, jae kwon lee, maeona mendelson, jan rumi, and teresita bernales for their contributions of international significance.

 

 

WHEREAS, acknowledgement of and participation in international affairs, culture, education, and trade are recognized state concerns; and

WHEREAS, contributions by nongovernmental organizations led by private citizens of the State are a positive addition and of great benefit to governmental activities concerning international affairs, culture, education, and trade; and

WHEREAS, Jonathan Cowles and Jae Kwon Lee strive to nurture and spread the idea of a united Korean peninsula simply by rowing a boat named the Spirit of Hawaii around and within the two Korean nations, using the Hawaiian concept of aloha to bridge the ravine of differences between them; and

WHEREAS, Jonathan Cowles and Jae Kwon Lee have completed half of their mission by rowing along the entire coast of South Korea and plan to complete this journey by rowing along the North Korean coast and the Yalu river, thereby concluding a dramatic gesture in the tradition of former President Dwight Eisenhower's "People to People" initiative; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Maeona Mendelson, Ph.D., volunteered hundreds of hours of her time to spearhead the 1999 Millennium World Youth Congress hosted in Hawaii and further organized and supported a contingent of Hawaii youth in their participation in the 2003 World Youth Congress in Morocco; and

WHEREAS, Jan Rumi, the Kingdom of Morocco's Honorary Consulate to Hawaii, assisted with the Hawaii contingent that participated in the Moroccan-hosted World Youth Congress and also has volunteered his time in various ways to support efforts to improve and formalize Hawaii-Rabat relations; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Teresita Bernales, Ed.D., International Visitor Program Coordinator for the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, has been instrumental in bringing foreign government leaders to Hawaii to meet their American counterparts; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body hereby applauds and commends Jonathan Cowles, Jae Kwon Lee, Dr. Maeona Mendelson, Ph.D., Jan Rumi, and Dr. Teresita Bernales, Ed.D., for their contributions to international affairs, culture, education, and trade and extends to them its warmest aloha and best wishes for future endeavors.
