HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

COMMENDING CLARENCE LEE FOR HIS NOTEWORTHY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HAWAII'S CULTURE AND THE ARTS.

 

 

WHEREAS, the passion and vibrancy of the people, culture, and spirit of Hawaii are often captured in the arts, communicating to the world our love for this beautiful existence we so proudly proclaim as paradise; and

WHEREAS, CLARENCE LEE was born and raised in Honolulu, attended Iolani School, won a scholarship at the Honolulu Academy of Arts to attend Pomona College, and took a summer art course at the University of Hawaii taught by a noted Yale University Arts School chairman, who helped him enroll at the Ivy League institution; and

WHEREAS, CLARENCE LEE returned to Hawaii in 1966 to establish Clarence Lee Design & Associates, Inc., which is now one of Honolulu's largest design firms, and has developed over 200 symbols, earning him numerous national and international awards; and

WHEREAS, in 1992, CLARENCE LEE was commissioned to design a stamp commemorating the contributions of Chinese-Americans, and the overwhelming demand for it made it one of the most successful issues in U.S. Postal Service history, and also resulted in the Lunar New Year collection, a series of 12 stamps depicting the Chinese lunar symbols, with each animal figure following the ancient Chinese art of paper-cut; and

WHEREAS, having formed a bridge between East and West, CLARENCE LEE's work is recognized worldwide, with over 100 million Lunar New Year stamps snapped up by collectors everywhere, as one of only 128 U.S. designers invited to participate in the Survival Peace Poster project exhibited in Washington, D.C., Hiroshima, and Moscow, and as the designer of the first U.S.-China joint-issue stamp issued in 1994; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body hereby commends and honors CLARENCE LEE for his noteworthy contributions to Hawaii's culture and the arts, and extends its heartfelt mahalo and best wishes for continued success.
