HOUSE RESOLUTION

 

honoring and congratulating ezra r. kanoho, recipient of the 2004 native hawaiian chamber of commerce's `O`o award.

 

WHEREAS, Ezra R. Kanoho, a native Hawaiian, was born on September 16, 1927, in Lihue, Kauai; he attended Kamehameha Schools, Kauai Community College, and Honolulu Community College where he earned an Associate in Science degree; and

WHEREAS, he and his wife, Pauline (Brede), are the proud parents of four sons: Reuben, Paul, Solomon, and Ezra; and

WHEREAS, from 1948 until his retirement in 1987, Ezra R. Kanoho was employed by Hawaiian Telephone Company where he served in various capacities, including Island Manager and Safety Director; and

WHEREAS, through the years, this civic-minded individual has served on the Mayor's Task Force for Substance Abuse, the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement of Kauai, the Board of Directors of Alu Like, and the Board of Directors of United Way of Kauai; and

WHEREAS, he has also been President of the American Society of Safety Engineers, Kauai Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Rotary Club of Kauai; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, Ezra R. Kanoho embarked on a new career serving the people of Hawaii with his appointment to fill a vacancy in the State House of Representatives; with the strong support of his constituents, he has been re-elected to public office for eight consecutive two-year terms; and

WHEREAS, during his 18 years in the Legislature, Ezra R. Kanoho has been a key member of the powerful Committee on Finance for 14 years; and since 2001, he has been the Chair of the Committee on Water, Land Use, and Hawaiian Affairs; and

WHEREAS, currently, Ezra R. Kanoho is also a member of the Committee on Judiciary, Committee on Consumer Protection and Commerce, and Committee on Energy and Environmental Protection; he also serves as a member of the Hawaiian Caucus; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his lifelong dedication to and hard work in the community, the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce will commemorate its thirtieth year of service by bestowing its prestigious 2004 `O`O Award to Ezra R. Kanoho; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Twenty-second Legislature of the State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2004, that this body hereby honors and congratulates Ezra R. Kanoho, recipient of the 2004 Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce's `O`O Award, for his steadfast dedication to community service, and extends its warmest aloha and best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
